Don Stewart – ‘The Hope Of Something Better’

February 12, 2022 by FAA Board

don stewart

Don Stewart is a member of folk band Dalriada which specialises in Scottish music and, in particular, music written for the bagpipes.

He started a project a few years ago with the notion of recording a bagpipes album of tunes by Australian composers.  Liking the guitar/bouzouki parts and reflecting on a previous spoken word album (The Taste of Apple with James Laidler), he turned to the words of one of the country’s most famous poets Henry Lawson and melded them with the music that he had composed.

Read a review and watch a film clip of one of the new tracks at Listening Through The Lens.

A little while ago, we flagged Liam Gerner’s new album called The Bulletin Debate – Henry Lawson vs Banjo Paterson.

Based on a public dispute in The Bulletin newspaper between two of Australia’s best known writers and poets Lawson and Paterson and a few others, the debate took place via a series of poems about the merits of living in the Australian bush, published in 1892.

A new video from the project has been revealed “Borderland”:
