People’s Choice Award

CONDITIONS AND RULES:

Definitions:

  • This Award is determined by voting.
  • Voting is open to the public.
  • This award recognizes an outstanding folk performer solo/group/ensemble for their activity in the last year (1st July 2022 to 30th June 2023)
  • The Award recognizes the performers as “Australian Folk Music Awards –  People’s Choice – Folk Performer 2023”

Nomination Fee

  • A Nomination/Entry Fee of $25 is required to be paid at the time of the entry. This fee covers costs of coordination/ processing of entries. The fee is to be paid by credit card (Debit card not accepted) Entries will not be accepted without payment of the fee. The fee is non-refundable.

Nomination for People’s Choice Award

  • All Nominations must be made via the On-Line Entry Form.
  • Nominations close on 12 Midnight Sunday 31st July 2023 EST. Late entries will not be accepted.
  • The nominated artist for People’s Choice must be an Australian Permanent Resident.  Group/Acts members must comprise 50% of Australian permanent residents.
  • Ten (10) Finalists will be selected to be featured. Names of Finalists will be announced on 1st September for Public Voting.
  • Finalists may be required to provide additional media information/images.
  • Parental Permission must be submitted for nominations of persons under the age of 18 years.
  • Once you have submitted your nomination entry you will receive a confirmation email.
  • A list of TEN selected nominations will be listed
  • Voting
    • Each person may only vote once. Voting is tied to an individual email address
  • The Award will be announced at the AFMAs Awards Night & Concert on Wednesday 25th October

Folk Album of the Year – Traditional

Definitions:

  • This Award recognises an outstanding album of traditional music played in any folk music genre.
  • The Award recognises the recording artist(s) and others that have contributed to it’s recording
  • An album is considered to be a body of at least six (6) tracks or 30 minutes of music of which 75% are to be in a ‘traditional style’. These tracks can be original music or arrangements of traditional songs and tunes but must show a clear link to the tradition they draw from. 
  • The album shall be released for public purchase or access between the period 1st July 2022 to 30th June 2023.
  • The panel will assess the following: musical proficiency, creativity of arrangement, concept of the album, recording quality, potential interest and impact of the album.

  • A Nomination/Entry Fee of $25 is required to be paid at the time of the entry. This fee covers costs of coordination/ processing of entries. The fee is to be paid by credit card (Debit card not accepted) Entries will not be accepted without payment of the fee. The fee is non-refundable.

  • Awards are decided by a panel of selected judges with expertise in folk music and the folk music sector. Their decisions are deemed final. No correspondence will be entered into.
  • Five (5) Finalists from across the award categories will be selected to be featured as performers at the AFMA AWARDS event (Wednesday 25 th October)
  • Names of Finalists will be announced on 1st September. Finalists may be required to provide additional media information/images.
  • All recordings must fulfill legal requirements meaning songwriters have been properly credited and appropriate royalties have been paid

  • The Award recognizes the solo performer’s activities, contribution and achievements undertaken in the period 1st July 2022 to 30th June 2023.
  • The panel will assess the following:  The artist’s contribution to the diverse Australian folk music sector in the period 1st July 2022 to 30th June 2023 including at a community, local, state, national and international level
  • Solo artists may have contributed to a variety of other line-ups or been supported by other musicians on their projects and performances.

Lou Bennett Receives Red Ochre Award for Lifetime achievement

Dr Lou Bennett receives Red Ochre Award for Lifetime achievement under the First Nations Arts Award from the Australia Council for the Arts.

Dr Bennett is one of the finest, most creative, experienced, progressive, and accomplished  Aboriginal composers of our time. Lou is also an incredible performer and artistic director.

As well as her own performances and collaborations, Lou has become a mentor to now internationally acclaimed vocalists Deline Briscoe, Emma Donovan, Ursula Yovich, Leah Flanagan, Mindy Kwonton, Dan Sultan and Eric Avery.

The Maes Rescheduled Gigs

Melbourne folk duo The Maes were in the middle of their Victorian tour to support their new single “Make a Baby” while the current COVID circuit breaker lockdown in Victoria.

The duo have now announced rescheduled dates, to start later this month.

National Celtic Folk Festival Cancelled

Due to Government COVID restrictions enforcing the further lockdown situation in Victoria and after advice and discussions with stakeholders, the National Celtic Folk Festival 2021 at Portarlington Victoria will not be going ahead on the June long weekend.

Barunga Festival 2021

The Barunga Festival celebrates the best of First Nations art, sport, dance, music and cultural activities.

This year the event returns, over three days June 11 to 13, 80 kms southeast of Katherine, NT. 

The entire Darwin symphony orchestra will collaborate with remote First Nations artists singing traditional songs.  Other performers announced include Manuel Dhurrkay (Saltwater Band), Don Nunggarlu (Mambali), Jason Gurruwiwi, PHL, The Beat Dancers and Galiwin’ku Youth Band.
